Activity 2 – WHS Detective

Twelve months ago, EAP Shelter introduced an injury and accident recording system. The simple system records back injuries to outdoor timber workers who manually stack timber in two locations. The workers start at 5.30am and finish at 1.30pm. They are exposed to extreme climatic conditions working in cold conditions in winter. Not surprisingly a high incidence of back injuries is evident. The company has instigated a special report on back injuries. Review the records to see if any trends are evident. Remember, this exercise aims to draw knowledge from the data. For example, you might consider the question “Do injuries happen more frequently in the winter months?” The records detail back injuries in the first 10 days of both January and June.

The depth at which you analyse your data is restricted only to your investigative thinking capacity and the amount of time you have to conduct the analysis. Use qualitative concepts as tools to measure attitudes. Ultimately, the key to this exercise is that you consistently ask, “WHY?” It is when we understand why an accident has occurred that we can put strategies in place to ensure this won’t happen again. Identifying a pattern can help us to answer this question.
