In my healthcare organization, a decent set of policies and procedures are followed which supplement good communication and health care services provided by the organization. My organization follows a rigid policy of providing high quality healthcare services to its patrons. The patients are not discriminated against any attribute and everyone is treated equally based on their issues. At the health care center, we are well aware of the importance of effective communication in providing unparalleled health care services. The staff i.e. doctors, nurses, technicians are well aware of the importance of good communication among themselves as well as with the patients.
The staff at my healthcare organization is required to maintain daily logs; in which they highlight and maintain a record of the major happenings throughout the day. A record of the patient’s illnesses, its severity and prognosis is also maintained and reviewed at regular intervals. The policy of the organization is to provide good quality healthcare with the best possible means. Communication is given vital importance and regular trainings are conducted by the staff to ensure that they are equipped with the basic knowledge, skills and equipment to deal with a diverse population from different race, culture, ethnicity and religion.
Communication is given high priority at all levels in my organization. A diverse staff works at the health care center. The staff is well versed in other languages as well. It allows them to cater the minorities and to ensure good communication between the healthcare providers and the patient. Regular meetings are also conducted and patient feedback is highly encouraged so relevant improvements can be made. At my organization, after the initial engagement with the patient, the staff conducts a thorough assessment of their needs. If the patient is speaking a different language, it is made sure that they are aware of the treatment process and feel comfortable. Translators are available at my healthcare organization so that communication can take place. Apart from that, regular meetings are also conducted . The data can be captured from patients & service users by using multiple channels that include online, Handheld devices, an Email, Kiosks, SMS text , Paper, Telephone. From carrying out a patient experience audit and forming a strategy, to collecting and analyzing data, to designing services, communicating with patients and measuring performance.
System in Practice at Workplace
My organization is equipped with all the essentials which supplement communication between all the parties. The office staff is well versed in technology and makes use of email, fax and phone. The medical staff i.e. doctors, nurses, have a suitable mode of communication in place as well. These modes of communications include the use of mobile devices, Emails, Tablets, telephones etc. The organization employs a number of full time translators which assists us in serving a diverse population on a regular basis.
At my organization, healthcare communication theories are thoroughly adapted by employees and the management teams who follow the policies and regulations of the organization (Mullins, 2005, pp. 14). These courses are also a reminder of what the original values of the organization are, and how important it is to adhere to them in this profession. The most significant factor in health care is the patients, and since usually they are in a fragile state to have reached across to healthcare organizations in the first place, they are to be made the priority.
It is believed that a few changes in the organization are necessary for general improvement and lesser communication issues. For bigners it would be appropriate to try and incorporate more training sessions for healthcare providers who have not previously dealt with people of varied backgrounds. Interviews and assessing patients in their own language is surely one of the best ways to reach out to them. Appropriate use of bilingual or bicultural techniques will also be incorporated into basic training. Often, healthcare providers rely on previous knowledge to make an assessment about returning patients, but it would be better to encourage use of an open question session that helps in increasing the understanding of patients’ needs through learning about their culture.
Treatment plans that better accommodate a patient’s cultural beliefs or background will be utilized, as well as clear written instructions for any training health care providers. For example if we consider Hispanics, then it would not be wrong to say that they share a strong heritage that includes family and religion, each subgroup of the Hispanic population has distinct cultural beliefs and customs. It is a vital ingredient in ensuring quality health care (Brach & Fraser, 2000, pp. 181). Culturally competent medical services lead to improved health outcomes, catalyze the efficiency of clinical and support staff and also ensure increased patient satisfaction with the services.
The surge of immigrants in the developing world over the past four decades has led to a proliferation of alien languages and cultures. For instance, in the United Kingdom, there is a use of at least 16 languages that are spoken in homes. In an attempt to deal with the growing cultural diversity, healthcare systems are paying a heightened level of attention to cater the linguistic and cultural services offered at hospitals and clinics. These competencies highlight the ability of healthcare institutions to respond in an effective manner to the psychosocial and language needs of the patients.
According to Smith (2000), a culturally competent healthcare facility should incorporate the following essentials

- The healthcare facility should not promote a specific language or culture and must operate in an open environment.

- The services should be provided in a manner which is consistent with the cultural norms of the patient.
- Availability of translators for clients’ who do not speak the English language.
- The medical staff should be well trained on different cultures, ethnicities and languages so that they can associate with the patients in a better way.
