A resume is a source of advertising one’s qualities and unique capabilities. Once you are done with your college studies, most of you will look for jobs, but most of the freshers do not understand how to write an effective resume and often make silly mistakes, which reduce their chances of securing a job. Writing a resume is an art; it’s a document that speaks on your behalf and conveys your capabilities and talents to your potential employers. Before appearing for an interview, you are assessed by your resume and most of the times even after possessing all the required qualifications, you never get a call from the HR and keep on thinking as to what went wrong.

While writing your resume you have to be specific and evidently showcase your major assets like- your credentials, experience (if any), accomplishments, competencies, and other qualities. You have to write your resume in a way that it shows you as the most suitable candidate for the job you have applied. HR people receive many resumes, and it is not possible for them to read each and every bit of your resume. On an average, a recruiter decides in 10-15 seconds whether a person is suitable for a job or not.  The start of your resume should be such that it appeals the recruiter and induce him to read more about you. A well-written resume solves half of your problems, and definitely can make you one of the shortlisted candidates.

You must have seen that some people even after having average qualifications can secure jobs even before those who have always excelled in studies. The reason is that getting a job is all about marketing yourself efficiently. Those who know this art can effortlessly secure a job than those who only bank upon their knowledge and qualifications. I am not saying that skills don’t matter, they do, but to make a recruiter aware of your capabilities you have to submit your resume. If your resume is not sufficient, you may not get the chance to show your abilities in person to the recruiter.

I have made a stepwise list which you can follow to write a good resume for yourself or others.

  • Keep it well-ordered and tidy- Write your resume in readable font size and use a correct font. Don’t use artistic fonts while writing a resume as it may not give a professional impression. Write in 10-12 pt as it is considered to be the most appropriate font size for a resume. Choose Arial, Sans Serif, Times New Roman or Helvetica as they are the commonly used fonts for official purposes. Try and highlight using bullet points for more clarity and brevity.
  • Address Information- Start with providing your contact information along with your address. Clearly mention your mobile phone or any other contact number, email id and the permanent residence address. In the contact section, also do provide the details of your professional social media account (LinkedIn account information, etc.)
  • Education Qualification- In this section, highlight your educational qualifications along with the CGPAs or grades that you have secured. Write in the reverse chronological method that is the most recent qualification at the top. Provide the details of your qualifications clearly.
  • Additional Qualification- Mention any other courses that you have done in this section. Indicate the name of the institution and the year in which you have completed a said course.
  • Work Experience- Provide the details of the various job that you have done so far. Organization’s name, starting and ending date, roles and responsibilities come under this section. Start in reverse sequential manner that is most recent employment at the top. For clear and concise information, write down your experience in bullet points so that the employers can have clarity. In case you are a fresher, you can mention any internship which you have done in your college time.
  • Personal Interests- In this section, don’t keep on writing about your interests and hobbies. The intent of this section is to make the recruiter known of the various interests that you have, and this may help him the conversation going during the time of personal interview.

The most important tip while writing a resume or during an interview is, to be honest. Don’t provide distorted facts to the recruiter as recruiters are experienced professionals, and they can easily make out where a person is lying. Be honest about all the information that you provide in your resume. If there is a gap in your career, mention it and the genuine reason behind it. Recruiters appreciate honesty and morality. Your resume is a document that is going to speak for you, and therefore; write an effective resume that will convey the impression to the recruiter.
