Transformational leadership is an approach that changes an individual and social system. It creates positive and valuable changes in followers with the aim of developing them into leaders. Enacted in its authentic form, it motivates and enhances performances of the followers in a variety of ways like connecting follower’s sense of ability and also the collective identity of the organization to the mission. To become a role model and inspiration of followers, a leader should challenge them to ownership of their work. A leader can align followers with task that optimize their performance by understanding strengths and weaknesses.
A transformational leader motivates its followers by making them aware of the importance of task’s outcome and reminding them to go beyond their self-interest for the sake of organization and activating their higher order needs. In this leadership style, followers trust, admire and show respect towards their teacher and are always motivated to do more than what original expected to be done.
Transformational leadership is a process where “leaders and their followers raise one another to higher levels of morality and motivation.” An effective leadership is the one who improves the team and organization’s efficiency by influencing people. There are four elements of transformational leadership: Idealized Influence, Inspirational Motivation, Individualized Consideration, and Intellectual Stimulation.
The components of transformational leadership to include charisma, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individual consideration
- Idealized influence:- The leader has idealized influence or charisma, who act as strong role model and followers wants to be like them. These leaders usually have high standard of moral and ethical behavior and can be counted to do the right things. It is also characterized by a vision and a sense of instilling in and among group to gain respect and trust.
- Inspirational motivation:- A leader motivates its followers by communicating high expectations, sharing vision, using symbols and emotional appeals so that the followers could achieve better than they would have in their own self interest.
The example of inspirational motivation is a sales manager who motivates its employees on how to stand out in their work through encouraging words and pep talks that communicates the essential role they play in the growth of the organization.
- Intellectual stimulation:-The leader stimulates its followers to be creative and innovative, who challenges their belief and supports them when they try to approach their own and organizations problems with new ideas.
This kind of leadership promotes thinking capacity of the followers and engaging them with problem solving situations.
- Individual consideration:- The leader provides a friendly or co-operative environment to support individual needs of the followers and also the leader be a coach and adviser to assist the followers to grow and tackle its personal challenges.
