What cultural challenges are posed by Disney’s expansion into Asia? How are these different from those in Europe?
Asia is a tremendous attractive place for Disney due to its large population and the low number of theme parks. This company reached great heights of success in Tokyo, whereas the Hong Kong Park was relatably less profitable. The company believes that further expansion into the region is worthwhile.
Disney should tailor the other components to meet the local needs.
The language is the biggest challenge which the company faces in its expansion. Mostly Asian countries do not use English as their first language, which creates a significant problem for the company. Secondly, it is challenging to integrate the culture and festivals of the countries into the theme park. It is necessary to incorporate the theme in the theme park, but as Asian nations differ in the culture so, it becomes difficult. The company also have to give importance to the national festival as these are important for people. The company face a massive problem with understanding the culture and lifestyle of the people. For instance, Disney thought that it is fine to offer fin soup in his menu, but it didn’t though the reaction of environmentalists in the region. Similar problems were faced in France as the majority of people speak French. But people’s lifestyle was quite the same and hence, they easily blended.
