List and discuss the three objectives of tort law

Tort law is said to address and provide a remedy for civil wrongdoings not arising out of contractual obligations. A person who suffers any of legal damage may be able to use tort law to receive compensation from someone legally responsible, or liable, for those injuries.

Tort law follows three purposes. The first is to compensate the victim, the second is responsible for punishing the wrongdoer, and the third is to deter harmful activities.

1)    Compensation as an end in itself – physical injury or an insult to a person’s property or himself because helping the victim is a good thing.

2)    Corrective justice – compensation comes from the person that should be paying it (fairness).

3)    Social control (promote good social behavior) – tort rules may affect peoples’ conduct – punishment may deter/prevent certain actions, an incentive.

Tort law is also categorized as intentional torts and negligent torts.
