Human Resources Management (HRM)—what a mouthful! Class, this term, I will introduce you to the concepts of HRM—what it is, what it does (typically), what it can do (optimally), and what it should do (strategically). To start, let’s work on a few introductory questions. What purpose does HRM serve in an organization? What role does HRM serve in your organization (or your previous organization)? What does “strategic” HRM sound like it means, in your opinion?
HRM which stands for Human Resource Management, and I would like to start with defining the purpose of HRM or simply just management. It not only deals with management of various important and crucial things such as the the management of operations, materials, machines and many other such things, but also deals with one of the most important element in any organization and that is the workforce of people. Since people are the biggest asset to any organization it is very important to maintain the workforce efficiently and effectively. People are the sole reason for the existence of any organization as people are the biggest asset to any organization. So in lay man terms, the primary focus of the HRM is to manage the human resource of the organization besides various other important things. The Encyclopedia of Business Terms states that the most important purpose of the HRM is essentially to maximize the productivity of any organization by investing a huge amount of time on the workforce.
There are various areas of HRM, but it can broadly be categorized into three main categories which are:
1. Staffing and Recruitment,
2. Employee compensation and benefits and
3. Defining the job description of various job profiles. Human Resource is also responsible for issues related to recruitment, performance appraisal, promotions, training and development, safety and security of employees, motivating the employees, etc.
Strategic HRM to me sounds to be a very effective plan of any organization which has plans to sustain long in these competitive world and aspires to achieve it’s organizations goals regularly. It is very important to lay a strong foundation on the business strategic goal of any organization. Which can help the firm to increase it’s productivity.
