Maxwell (pp11-20)

Maxwell – influence. Who are we influencing? How do we influence them? What influence effect might I have that I don’t realise I have? These questions lead us to consider that our influence as people and then as professionals might need a re-think? (20 mins)

When the small group discussion is completed, the whole tutorial group will hear the perspectives of each group. (30mins)

Business – The fundamental attribute of a leader is that she or he influences others towards the collective goal(s) of the organisation. Although a good manager will also be a good leader, management is a formal position to which is attached power, authority and responsibility. Leadership is not necessarily positional. Leaders have referent power usually based on their personal attributes. An outstanding book on leadership is: Leman.K. & Pentak, W. (2004) The way of the shepherd (Zondervan: Grand Rapids, MI)

Social Science – Those involved in people helping are key “influencers” and as such need to accept responsibility for this influence and commit themselves to personal growth as a way of underpinning their work as people helpers. People helpers are not afraid to acknowledge weakness within them and do so willingly as a way to more effectively enter in to the struggle in the people they seek to help.

Education – The bottom line is that a teacher is a leader. A teacher creates the atmosphere and the culture as well as building the space for learning in the classroom. A teacher defines the boundaries in all areas especially in classroom management. So a teacher must accept the challenge and recognise accountability to the students, their parents, the wider school community and themselves. In your PEP (next semester)/ Task 3 (week 15 this semester) you will be assessed on “teacher presence” which is the outward sign of a teachers recognition of their role as a leader. So start thinking about what makes a good leader? What kind of leader will you be?
